Cellular transport refers to the movement of compounds across the outer wall or membrane of the cell. This transport is critical in two respects. Firstly, transport allows a cell to take in and release compounds in accordance with its biological function (for example, the uptake and release of oxygen by red blood cells). Secondly, it allows cells to regulate characteristics of this transport (for example, increased transport of glucose into muscle cells during activity).
